Stunning performances blending traditional culture with cutting-edge technologies lit up the closing ceremony of China's 15th National Games in Shenzhen City, south China's Guangdong Province, on Friday evening. The ceremony, which commenced at 20:00 local time, culminated in a solemn yet joyous farewell as Wang Huning, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, officially declared the Games close. Following a flag-lowering ceremony, the iconic cauldron flame was gently extinguished to the beautiful strains of cellos, marking the end of an unforgettable sporting chapter. The gala performance, staged on a luminous water stage framed by Shenzhen's radiant cityscape, consisted of six chapters, artfully weaving together the rich tapestry of Lingnan culture and local intangible cultural heritage with cutting-edge technologies developed by companies in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Among the most mesmerizing moments were dancers moving in perfect harmony with robots, underscoring the region’s leadership in China’s technological advancement. A vibrant montage of athletic prowess followed, showcasing the energy of skateboarding, the grace of artistic swimming, and the thunderous power of dragon boat racing. The gala performance concluded with a newly composed song, "Welcome to the Greater Bay Area Frequently," embodying the Games' slogan: "Passionate National Games, Dynamic Greater Bay Area." The 15th National Games, China’s highest-level and largest national multi-sport event, were held from Nov. 9 to 21 and co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao -- the first time the Greater Bay Area has jointly hosted the Games. This edition of the Games featured 419 events across 34 sports in the competitive program, as well as 166 events across 23 sports in the mass participation program. During the Games, athletes broke eight world records and five world youth records, along with 13 Asian records, 10 Asian youth records, 14 national records, and seven national youth records in events ranging from athletics and swimming to shooting, weightlifting, track cycling, and sport climbing. Beyond the record-breaking totals, athletes in 12 events delivered performances that exceeded the winning marks from the Paris Olympics, underscoring the growing global competitiveness of Chinese sport.
