China: Preliminaries for mass participation events of China's 15th National Games underway
Excitement for the 15th National Games is building up across China, as the preliminaries for the mass participation events are already underway nationwide though the opening of the Games is still nearly 200 days away. The Games will be jointly hosted by Guangdong Province, and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong, and Macao from November 9 to 21, 2025. The first final of the mass sports competitions took place on May 8, with the orienteering events in Maoming, Guangdong. A total of 38 teams from 23 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, and the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions participated, bringing together 432 athletes. The event wrapped up on May 11 with a total of six gold medals awarded to the winners. These mass participation events are divided into two categories, namely competition and demonstration. The competition span across 23 major events and 166 sub-events, including table tennis, badminton, tennis, football, basketball, tai chi, and dragon and lion dancing. The preliminaries for mass participation events are scheduled to be held nationwide from February to the end of October, while the finals are scheduled to be held in the Greater Bay Area from May to November. According to Wang Xiaoyang, an official from the General Administration of Sport of China, the goal of these events is to provide citizens of all walks of life with an opportunity to participate in the national sports event. In addition to the event design, the renovation of the sports venues for the 15th National Games also emphasizes the spirit of mass participation. The main stadium for the 15th National Games is located at the Guangdong Olympic Stadium in Guangzhou. Renovations to the stadium are about to complete. One of the most notable aspects of the renovation is the transformation of the stadium's interior to create an open space. The second-floor area, previously enclosed with glass curtain walls, has been fully opened and now features an 800-meter circular fitness track, designed to be accessible to the public for fitness activities. After the Games, these facilities will be made available to citizens free of charge. Lai Haoliang, director of the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center, emphasized that the goal of these renovations goes beyond hosting large-scale events. The upgraded stadium will be handed over to the team for the opening ceremony of the 15th National Games by the end of May. The National Games, held every four years, is the nation's largest and highest level national multi-sports event. The last edition in 2021 saw over 12,000 athletes compete in Shaanxi Province.
