South Korea: Extreme weather cuts lettuce supply, causing price hike in ROK
Extreme weather has resulted in a reduced lettuce supply across the Republic of Korea (ROK), as the leafy green vegetable struggles to survive with severe climate disruptions. Prolonged heat in the summer, torrential rains in the fall, and a sudden early-winter cold snap have devastated the production of the vegetable, triggering a sharp decline in the yield of the vegetable. As a result, restaurants across the country are scrambling to adjust, with major fast-food brands, sandwich chains, and independent cafes having already removed salads and lettuce-based menu items. According to data from the ROK's Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation, the average wholesale price of iceberg lettuce has reached 4,725 won per kilogram (about 3.44 U.S. dollars) in November, nearly 1.8 times higher than the average price in October. "Vegetable and fruit prices have skyrocketed. Eating out has become more expensive, and even cooking at home costs much more. I feel really stressful," said a Seoul resident. Unstable climate conditions have increasingly impacted the ROK's vegetable supply in recent years, with prices for tomatoes, Chinese cabbage, apples, and other climate-sensitive produce having also experienced frequent fluctuations.
