1. VARIOUS OF POLLING CLERKS COUNTING VOTES AT POLLING STATIONS BISSAU, GUINEA-BISSAU - NOV. 24: Vote counting was underway in Guinea-Bissau on Monday, Nov. 24, one day after citizens cast their ballots to elect a new president and 102 members of parliament.

Polling stations across the West African nation closed at 5 p.m. on Sunday, marking the end of voting in a contest featuring 12 presidential candidates, including incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who is seeking a second term.

Other contenders include former President Jose Mario Vaz, 67, who served from 2014 to 2020, Fernando Dias, 47, of the Party for Social Renewal (PRS), who is seen as Embalo’s main challenger, Baciro Dja, 52, who served two brief stints as prime minister during Vaz’s term in 2015.

Guinea-Bissau has experienced repeated political instability since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974, including several coups and attempted coups.

The country of 2.2 million people heavily depends on cashew exports and remains among the world’s poorest nations.
