BAGHDAD, IRAQ - NOV. 26: Air pollution in Iraq’s capital Baghdad was captured on Tuesday, Nov. 26, as visibility dropped in several parts of the city, with air quality reaching the “purple” (very hazardous) level, according to local authorities.

The Environment Ministry said a meteorological phenomenon known as “thermal inversion” trapped pollution near the ground, preventing it from dispersing.

The rise in pollution was attributed to stagnant air, unchecked industrial emissions, and widespread waste burning, which were said to have created a thick blanket of toxic smoke over the capital.
