Brazil's Supreme Court Orders Bolsonaro to Start 27-Year Prison Sentence for Coup Plot . Brazil’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro to begin serving a 27-year, three-month prison sentence for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that the case was final, with no further appeals possible. Bolsonaro, 70, has been in detention in Brasilia since Saturday after being deemed a flight risk. Court documents show he tried to tamper with his ankle monitor, which he blamed on medicine-induced paranoia. He will receive full-time medical care in custody. The court found Bolsonaro had conspired to arrest and execute Moraes, assassinate Lula and his running mate, and install himself back in power—plans that failed due to lack of military support. Rioters who stormed government buildings on 8 January 2023, including around 1,500 arrests, were found to have been incited by him. Bolsonaro is also barred from running for public office until 2060. Co-conspirators, including former security ministers Augusto Heleno and Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira, must also start serving their sentences.
