Japan: Experts warn of dangerous signs of Japan's militarism revival
Storyline: Experts from across the world have warned of the dangerous trend reflected in Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's Taiwan-related remarks, which revealed Japan blatantly undermining the post-war international order and reviving militarism. In early November, Takaichi said on an official occasion that the Chinese mainland's "use of force on Taiwan" could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan and implied the possibility of Japan's armed intervention in the Taiwan Strait. Despite multiple representations and protests from China, the Japanese side has refused to retract the remarks. Takaichi's remarks have drawn strong criticism. International figures called it worrying, reflecting an attempt to distort history and the resurgence of Japanese militarism. "Takaichi's erroneous remarks are worrying. It is an attempt to revive militarism. What's worse, it is an interference in China's internal affairs. Countries in the world recognize the one-China policy, and the fact that Taiwan is part of China," said Surasit Thanadtang, director of the Thai-Chinese Strategic Research Center of the National Research Council of Thailand. "A Japanese prime minister actually attempts to distort history, revive militarism in Japan, and even talk about acquiring nuclear weapons. This is simply nonsense and is beyond people's imagination," said Helena Kocova, a journalist from the Czech media outlet Nase Pravda. "The one-China principle is an unshakable norm. Since 1971, the United Nations has consistently upheld this principle. Any country that challenges it constitutes a serious violation of the international system. I believe the Japanese Prime Minister's actions harm the interests of the Japanese people. China and Japan have close economic ties, and such statements that cross the red line will lead to serious consequences. It will not only impact the highly interconnected economy of both countries, but will have repercussions throughout the entire region," said Gustavo Sabino Vaca Narvaja, former Argentine ambassador to China.
