A major fire at the WangFukCourt residential complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district resulted in at least 44 fatalities on 26 November 2025. Thick smoke was seen rising through the buildings as flames spread rapidly through the eight-block complex, which houses more than 4,600 residents.
Authorities reported that the fire may have been accelerated by unsafe scaffolding and foam materials at Wang Cheong House, enabling it to move quickly between structures. A 37-year-old firefighter was among those killed.
Police confirmed that three employees of the construction company responsible for ongoing work at the site—including two directors and an engineering consultant—have been taken into custody on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the incident. Investigations into the cause and progression of the fire are ongoing.
