Terrifying moment photographer locks eyes with black panther sitting just metres away

For seven years, I carried a dream that began the day I first picked up a camera, to witness a black leopard in the wild. It became more than an obsession: endless safaris, documentaries, late-night calls with guides, even a separate phone gallery and a bedroom TV screensaver devoted entirely to these elusive “blackies.” After an unforgettable Mara trip, we drove twelve long hours to Laikipia with one purpose: to find Giza. That very evening, while we were having breakfast under a random tree after searching the forest for a black panther, unaware she was already watching us, we suddenly spotted movement near a tree. A normal leopard climbed up with a hare in its jaws… and there, right in front of our Land Cruiser, sat Giza. I didn’t see her at first; I was frantically asking, “Where is Giza?” until she appeared in my frame like a shadow stepping into the light. The emotion that hit me in that moment felt like holding my newborn daughter for the first time, overwhelming, raw, unforgettable. I froze, tears in my eyes, trying to absorb the reality of a dream finally coming true. The next three days with Giza, watching her hunt, witnessing her with her two cubs, were magic beyond words. And this is only the beginning. The dream continues.
