Japan: Protesters demand prime minister's resignation, commitment to pacifist constitution
A group of Japanese protesters gathered on Friday evening in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward in support of the pacifist constitution, while demanding Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's resignation for leading the country further down the dangerous path of military expansion. At the rally, the protesters held placards and banners with slogans reading "Upholding the pacifist constitution", "Opposing military expansion", and "Resign now, Sanae Takaichi," with some of them delivering speeches criticizing the government's increasing military spending and attempt to revise the country's long-standing Three Non-Nuclear Principles. The cornerstone of Japan's pacifist constitution is Article 9, which renounces the nation's right to engage in war or to resort to military force to resolve international conflicts. For decades, this article has been a fundamental constraint on Japan's military endeavors. The Three Non-Nuclear Principles, not possessing, not producing and not allowing introduction of nuclear weapons into Japanese territory, were first declared in the Diet, Japan's parliament, by then Japanese Prime Minister Eisaku Sato in 1967 and viewed as a national credo. Various of participants rallying in support of pacific constitution, protesting military expansion, calling for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's resignation; 2. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) protester (name not given) (partially overlaid with shot 5): "We have consistently been opposed to the right to collective self-defense. As the only country in the world that suffered nuclear bombing, Japan must exercise extreme caution on nuclear issues and uphold the Three Non-Nuclear Principles, which, I believe, is extremely important. The military budget and the fiscal expenditure allocated to build up military capability will be at the expense of our livelihoods, but the government has continuously increased military spending anyway. I think we are heading down a really dangerous road." [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE]; 3. Various of protesters, banner [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE]; 4. Protester holding placard showing image of Takaichi; 5. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) protester (name not given) (partially overlaid with shot 8): "Japan is a country that used to wage wars of aggression, and since the end the Second World War, the Japanese people have vowed to not start any war ever again. However, almost imperceptibly, Japan has veered into a situation where it could get involved in another overseas war. We must never allow such a situation to continue, and we will promote the spirit of the pacifist constitution." [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE]; 6.
