Harsh winter threatens survival of displaced Gazans
An incoming harsh winter is posing a significant threat to the survival of many displaced Gazans living in fragile tents. In a displacement camp in eastern Gaza, Mai Hassouna lives with her four children in a worn-out tent after their home was destroyed in the war. She lost her young daughter last winter due to severe cold and now faces an even harsher season. A flimsy tent offers little protection from freezing winds, and with temperatures already dropping, Mai fears a tragedy similar to last year’s. Close to Mai’s tent, Tahreer Abu Jabal, a mother of seven from Beit Lahia, faces similar hardship after her home was destroyed, forcing her family into a tent that offers little protection from rain or wind. With declining aid and the absence of basic services, skin infections are spreading among children in the camps. Mothers like Tahreer struggle to afford treatment or even drinking water, which has become scarce and expensive. According to the United Nations, nearly two million Palestinians are displaced across the Gaza Strip, most lacking proper shelter. The UN says limited aid access is deepening the suffering as they face a freezing winter. Shotlist: Gaza Strip - Nov 28, 2025: 1. Various of tents for displaced Palestinians; 2. I didn’t even have a tent, or even the materials to make one back then. I couldn't save her. This year the weather is even harsher, and I’m terrified the same thing will happen and lose another one of my kids due to the coldness we suffer from." [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE]; 5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Tahreer Abu Jabal, displaced Palestinian: "This winter is extremely difficult for us. Especially that we live in tents, we have not experienced such situation before. As for my tent, there are nine of us here, including my children. When it rains, the tent turns into a waterfall over our heads, and I can’t keep my children warm.”; 8. My daughter is sick and I can't guess the reason, if it is allergy or fungal infection, even the medicine for my daughter, I'm unable to buy it. The doctor prescribed treatment for at least 150-200 shikles, but I don’t have the money. We even have to pay for the water we drink, which is not for free.”; 10. Aerial shots of tents; 11.
