The remains were reportedly found during search operations in Beit Lahia and transported from the area by vehicle.

Teams from Hamas’ armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, and the military wing of Islamic Jihad, the Al-Quds Brigades, participated in the effort alongside officials from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Hamas has already released 20 Israeli captives alive and handed over the remains of 27 out of 28, most of them Israelis, since the ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10. Israel, however, claimed that one of the received bodies did not match any of its listed captives.

Meanwhile, Israel released nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including 1,700 from Gaza, under a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas. Most of those released arrived in poor health, with several recounting experiences of torture, starvation, and humiliation inside Israeli prisons.

More than 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children, remain imprisoned in Israel, where they endure medical neglect and conditions that have led to the deaths of numerous detainees, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations.

A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was reached on Oct. 10, based on a 20-point peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump. Israel, however, has violated the truce multiple times.

Phase one of the ceasefire deal includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.

Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed nearly 70,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, and injured more than 170,900 people in a two-year war that has left much of the enclave in ruins.

Israel ties the start of negotiations for launching the second phase of the ceasefire agreement that took effect on Oct. 10 to receiving the bodies of all its captives. It claims that the remains of two Israeli captives are still in Gaza.
