Heavy rain from the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread flooding on roads in southern India.

Footage shows severe inundation near Wimco Nagar in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on December 3, following more than an hour of heavy rain.

Murky brown water rose ankle to calf deep, carrying leaves, plastic waste, and oily runoff from blocked drains.

As a precaution for student safety, authorities ordered schools in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts to close the following day.

In neighbouring Sri Lanka, Ditwah has killed at least 474 people, with 356 more people reported missing. Nearly a million residents were affected by the flooding, with around 200,000 taking refuge in more than 1,200 shelters.

The Sri Lankan government has announced a state of emergency and called on the international community for support in relief and recovery efforts.
