UNCAPTIONED: Fans Condemn World Cup Ticket Prices as 'Monumental Betrayal'
Fans Condemn World Cup Ticket Prices as ‘Monumental Betrayal’. Fans’ groups accused Fifa of a “monumental betrayal” after ticket prices for next year’s World Cup were revealed to run into the thousands of pounds. Football Supporters Europe said it was “astonished” by what it called Fifa’s “extortionate” pricing and urged the governing body to halt ticket sales immediately. The cheapest ticket for the final at New York’s MetLife Stadium was priced at £3,119, rising to more than £6,600 for premium seats. Supporters noted prices were up to seven times higher than at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with no concessions offered for children or other groups. For the first time, group-stage matches were priced based on the perceived popularity of teams, meaning fans of different nations paid different amounts for the same stage. England supporters faced higher prices than Scotland fans for early group games, despite Fifa providing no explanation for how “popularity” was calculated. Fans’ representatives said loyal supporters were being sidelined, with the lowest-priced tickets reserved for general sales rather than national supporters’ groups. The Football Supporters’ Association said the pricing was a “slap in the face,” arguing that loyalty and accessibility had been sacrificed at football’s biggest tournament.
