CANNES, FRANCE - DEC. 12: Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy held a book signing event in Cannes on Friday, drawing a large crowd to promote his new memoir detailing his recent experience in prison.

The event saw Sarkozy personally sign copies of his 216-page book, titled "Diary of a Prisoner," for readers.

The memoir, published on Wednesday, recounts Sarkozy's three-week detention at Paris's La Sante prison earlier this year. His incarceration followed a September conviction for allowing close associates to seek illicit campaign financing from Libyan officials ahead of his successful 2007 presidential bid, according to French newspaper Le Parisien.

Sarkozy, who served 20 days in jail before his release under judicial supervision on Nov. 10, describes in the book the monotony of life within the grey-walled prison, his daily routines, and moments of prayer.

The publication has drawn criticism from families of victims of the 1989 Union de Transports Aeriens (UTA) Flight 772 bombing. Relatives have expressed distress over how they are depicted in the memoir, though specific details of the portrayal were not immediately clarified in the reports.

Sarkozy's appeal against his conviction is scheduled to be heard from March 16 to June 3, 2026.
