CARACAS, VENEZUELA - JAN. 8: Venezuela has released a significant number of prisoners, including political detainees on Thursday, Jan. 8, as part of efforts to promote peace and social unity in the country, according to state media reports.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez announced the releases during an interview with state television VTV, describing the move as a demonstration of the Bolivarian government's commitment to seeking peace.

Rodriguez expressed gratitude to former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and the Qatari government for their contributions to the process. He characterized the releases as a necessary contribution toward the republic's peaceful existence and continued pursuit of prosperity.

The National Assembly president emphasized the government's openness to dialogue with political parties and civil society organizations that adhere to constitutional guidelines, pledging to continue working toward strengthening peace in the nation.
Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab confirmed that the release process was carried out in accordance with the country's justice system.

Authorities have not disclosed the exact number of individuals released.

Civil society organization Foro Penal reports that 863 political prisoners remain in Venezuela, including 86 individuals with dual citizenship.

The releases follow recent US air strikes on Venezuela and the detention of President Nicolas Maduro. Deputy President Delcy Rodriguez assumed the role of Acting President on January 5, taking the oath of office before the National Assembly.
