VARIOUS OF DYKER HIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD WITH CHRISTMAS LIGHTS, DECORATIONS AND VISITORS NEW YORK CITY, UNITED STATES - DEC. 12: The Dyker Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn once again transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland as its famed annual holiday lights display returned, drawing large crowds of local and international visitors.

Anadolu videoed the spectacular scenes on Friday, December 12, capturing the elaborate decorations that have made this a premier holiday attraction in New York City for over three decades.

The phenomenon is widely credited to resident Lucy Spata, who began decorating her home in 1986 as a tribute to her late mother’s love for holiday decor.

What began as a personal gesture of remembrance sparked a communal movement. Little by little, neighbors joined in, and today the epicenter of the displays spans from 11th to 13th avenues and 83rd to 86th streets, where the majority of homes participate in the friendly competition of holiday excess.

The tradition, popularly known as “Dyker Heights Lights,” sees residents compete to create the most elaborate displays.

Over 30 years later, the tradition has evolved into a global destination. The normally quiet streets of this suburban enclave in southeast Brooklyn now welcome thousands of spectators nightly.
