GAZA, PALESTINE - DECEMBER 12, 2025: A powerful winter storm sweeping the Gaza Strip has killed at least 12 Palestinians, including children, as torrential rain, freezing temperatures, and strong winds triggered deadly collapses of bombed-out buildings, flooded displacement camps, and exposed families to extreme cold, according to Gaza’s Interior Ministry, the Gaza Media Office, Civil Defense, and medical sources.
The Gaza Media Office said more than 27,000 displacement tents were flooded, swept away by torrents, or torn apart by strong winds, directly affecting over 250,000 displaced Palestinians whose makeshift shelters were destroyed or severely damaged by rain and runoff. About 250,000 families are currently living in displacement camps across the Gaza Strip, many facing cold weather and flooding inside fragile tents, according to the Civil Defense.
Along Gaza’s western coastal road, dozens of tents were submerged as the storm intensified, leaving displaced Palestinians, already uprooted by months of Israeli genocide, to endure yet another day of danger and cold. Families who lost their homes in the Israeli assaults struggled to keep their makeshift shelters from collapsing and to protect their children from the freezing weather.
Footage from the area shows rows of flooded tents, collapsed structures, and displaced families trying to scoop water out of their shelters, salvage what remains of their belongings, and collect debris from destroyed tents.
Almaze Sultan, one of the displaced Palestinians sheltering in the flooded encampment, described the ordeal: “We spent the whole night trying to bail water out with buckets, but it kept flooding back in. Everywhere turned into a lake. My children and I slept in the water. None of us have winter clothes. There are seven of us, and not a single pair of shoes is dry. My children froze through the night. For God’s sake, give us a proper tent, blankets, clothing. We cannot endure this any longer.”
Another displaced Palestinian, Bahjat Darduna, recounted the moment his family nearly drowned when their tent collapsed: “All our bedding is soaked. When the storm hit, my son, daughter-in-law, and grandchild were inside. The tent collapsed on top of them. If the neighbors hadn’t rushed over, they could have all died. We survived, but others have been killed or injured. There is no aid, no food. We are living through a real catastrophe.”
Although a ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10, living conditions in Gaza have not improved, as Israel continues to impose strict restrictions on the entry of aid trucks, violating the humanitarian protocol of the agreement.
Israel has killed more than 70,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 171,000 others in attacks in Gaza since October 2023, which have continued despite the truce.
