United Kingdom - December 15, 2025 Knockhatch Adventure Park has welcomed four Cheviot goats, one of Britain’s oldest and rarest goat breeds, marking a significant moment for conservation efforts in the United Kingdom. The Cheviot goat is considered Britain’s oldest goat breed, with origins dating back to Neolithic times. The animals are also known as British Primitive goats and originate from the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland. Only around 400 Cheviot goats remain worldwide. With this arrival, the Sussex attraction is now caring for approximately 1% of the global population of the breed. The new group consists of two billies and two nannies. The nannies are expected to produce offspring next year, which could play an important role in protecting the future of the endangered breed. Cheviot goats are known for their ability to withstand Britain’s cold and wet winters, having adapted over centuries to harsh conditions. Knockhatch’s children’s farm has served as a sanctuary for vulnerable native livestock breeds since November 2023. It is already home to Bagot goats, Dorking chickens, and Aylesbury ducks. “We’re thrilled to welcome these incredible animals,” said Ben Anderson, Zoo Manager at Knockhatch Adventure Park. “Although they’re small in stature and number, their history and conservation importance is enormous. Having 1% of the global Cheviot goat population here in Sussex is something we’re immensely proud of.”
