The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) held nationwide protests against security challenges such as terrorist attacks and armed gang activities.
Despite meetings held with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, NLC officials gathered in front of the Labour Congress building in the capital Abuja.
Protesters carried banners reading “We want a safe Nigeria,” “Poverty fuels insecurity,” and “We want to work in a safe environment,” while chanting slogans against the government.
Anara Rosemary, who took part in the protest, said insecurity in Nigeria continues to worsen and has reached a point where people can no longer remain silent.
Stating that Nigeria is no longer a place where people can travel with peace of mind, Rosemary said, “Our sons and brothers are being killed. Nigerian workers are being killed. We are no longer safe.”
Rosemary added that they were forced to protest in order to protect their lives.
Emmanuel Okereke said they were not asking for much from the government, but only demanding a safe environment.
Nigeria has long been affected by attacks carried out by armed gangs as well as terrorist organizations Boko Haram and the ISIS-affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in different parts of the country.
