France: Angry Farmers Lead Tractor Convoy Protest In Northern France
Glisy, France - December 18, 2025 A video recorded on the morning of December 18, 2025 shows a calm but determined convoy of dozens of tractors and agricultural vehicles moving slowly along a main road in Glisy, near Amiens in northern France. The footage was filmed and shared by National Rally deputy Matthias Renault, who was present at the scene to express support. It shows farmers demonstrating under the hashtag #AgriculteursEnColere in solidarity with fellow farmers across the country. The northern demonstration is part of a broader wave of nationwide protests that escalated sharply in mid-December 2025. Farmers mobilized by unions including FNSEA, Jeunes Agriculteurs, Confederation paysanne, and Rural Coordination are protesting two central issues. One concern is the government’s mandatory mass culling of entire cattle herds following outbreaks of lumpy skin disease, a highly contagious viral illness that affects cattle but is not transmissible to humans. The second issue is strong opposition to the planned EU-Mercosur free trade agreement, which farmers fear would flood European markets with cheaper South American beef produced under lower environmental, health, and labor standards. The protests have been disruptive but largely peaceful. Thousands of farmers blocked major motorways, including the A64, A63, and routes near the Spanish border. Hay and manure were dumped on roads and rail lines, stopping train traffic, while access to ski resorts in the Pyrenees was targeted, threatening holiday tourism revenue. In southwestern France, where lumpy skin disease outbreaks are concentrated, clashes occurred during culls, including the use of tear gas by police. The government responded by launching a mass vaccination program for up to one million cattle and calling for calm over the holidays. France also pushed to delay the Mercosur vote, contributing to its likely postponement. Public support remains strong, and the movement shows no signs of stopping unless key demands are met.
