A cable car broke down in San Francisco, leaving at least 15 people injured.

The San Francisco Fire Department was called to 1351 California Street, between Leavenworth and Hyde, after the historic tram came to an abrupt halt on Monday afternoon.

Emergency responders said two people were rushed to hospitals, while 11 others were treated on-site for minor aches and pains.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which operates the city's iconic cable cars, said it is investigating the cause but provided no immediate explanation.

A spokesman for the agency added: 'Safety for our passengers on all Muni vehicles continues to be our top priority.

'We'll be conducting a full review of incident details to ensure continued safety on the cable cars.'

San Francisco's cable cars are manually operated vehicles that run on steel tracks along city streets, pulled by a continuously moving underground cable. They are a historic symbol of the city and a popular mode of transport for both residents and tourists.
