Tourist pulled from rough sea while taking selfies on beach in Bali
A Czech tourist struck down by waves while walking along a beach was rescued from rough seas in Bali.
Martello Romani, 49, was taking selfies along the shore when a rogue wave crashed into him in Nusa Penida on January 9.
Lifeguards on Kelingking Beach scrambled to pull the injured holidaymaker out of the water as powerful tides dragged him out to sea.
Ketut Kesuma Jaya, the island's police chief, said: 'The weather was clear at the time of the incident, but the waves in the area were quite large and unpredictable.
'Suddenly, a large wave came and knocked the victim down, causing him to fall and experience an emergency.'
Officers administered first-aid before calling the local search and rescue agency to evacuate the Czech national from the beach.
Footage shows volunteers carrying Martello, seen strapped onto a rescue board, through the narrow path on the island's iconic 'T-Rex' cliff.
Personnel said the rescue took an hour as they had difficulty navigating the 170-metre-high (560 feet) stairs.
Search-and-rescue coordinator Cakra Negara said: 'At around 5:35 pm WITA, an ambulance from the Griya Medika Clinic was on standby and immediately transported the victim to the Griya Penida Clinic. According to medical personnel, the victim suffered a dislocated hip.
'We advise tourists to always follow safety instructions, pay close attention to natural conditions and sea waves, and avoid staying too close to the shoreline, especially in areas with powerful waves such as Kelingking Beach.'
Indonesia's beaches, though stunning, pose several dangers including strong rip currents, rogue waves, and unpredictable tides that can make swimming perilous, especially for inexperienced swimmers.
