This is the dramatic moment Kilauea volcano spewed 800ft high lava fountains in its latest eruption in Hawaii.

Footage shows fiery molten rocks bursting from the crater in a spectacular display on Monday, during an eruption that lasted around 10 hours.

The US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said: 'Episode 40 produced 7.1 million cubic yards (5.5 million cubic metres) of lava during the high fountain eruption.'

Dust and rocks from the eruption, known as tephra, fell in nearby areas at the height of the activity, though no major damage was reported.

This eruption marked the 40th episode in a series of periodic activity that began in December 2024.

Kilauea is the world's most active volcanic mass and is the central feature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Its caldera is nearly three miles long and two miles wide, with an area of more than four square miles.
