Stunning photos show a portrait gallery's Jacobite-inspired Christmas tree.

Staff at the National Galleries Scotland: Portrait in Edinburgh selected the decorations - choosing ornaments in shades of blue, gold, and burgundy in honour of their portrait of Jacobite heroine Flora Macdonald.

Flora is best known for aiding Charles Edward Stuart's escape following the Battle of Culloden in 1746, leading to her arrest and imprisonment in the Tower of London.

The portrait shows Flora draped in a burgundy tartan, dressed in a white and pale blue dress and sporting white roses on her hair and her chest.

Rachel Sparks, Retail Merchandiser, and Julia Fraser, Retail Supervisor, took three days to decorate the tree, hand-tying each bauble to the branches.

The 10-ft tree has also been covered with golden portrait frames as a nod to the artwork inside the museum.

Rachel said: "The colour palette is inspired by our Flora Macdonald portrait - pastel blues and deep golden and burgundy shades."

"The velvet bows are a nod to the rich velvets worn in the painting - my favourite are the decorations that look like ruffs worn by Mary Queen of Scots."

"We bought a plastic tree due to the proximity to artworks - natural trees carry the risk of pests!"

The team plan to keep the tree on display until 5 January.
