Government Launches Review Into Failures In Activist Case. The government has ordered a review into what it describes as serious information failures surrounding British-Egyptian activist Alaa Abd El Fattah. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper says senior ministers, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, were unaware of historic social media posts, made by the activist that later resurfaced and sparked widespread backlash. The posts included calls for violence and have been described by the government as abhorrent. The controversy erupted days after Abd El Fattah arrived in the UK following his release from prison in Egypt. Sir Keir Starmer has since faced criticism for publicly welcoming him, saying he was “delighted” by his return. Abd El Fattah has issued an apology, saying he understands how shocking and hurtful the posts were and stressing he takes accusations of antisemitism seriously. Opposition parties have seized on the issue, with Conservatives and Reform UK calling for his citizenship to be revoked and for him to be deported. Reform UK says it would even change the law to make that possible.
