4. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DISPLACED PALESTINIAN MOTHER, ESMA AL-JABRI, SAYING:
“…The rain and the freezing temperatures are taking a heavy toll on my children, particularly my twin baby girls. I do my best to shield them from the elements, but life in a tent is incredibly grueling.…
…Without the plastic sheeting, the rain would pour directly onto us. One of my daughters is currently ill; I stay awake through the night just to ensure they remain warm…
…I often sacrifice my own food and water for their sake because I am terrified for their health. Any alternative would be better than this life in a tent…”
5. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DISPLACED PALESTINIAN FATHER, RAMAZAN EL-CEBRI, SAYING:
“…We are currently living in a displacement camp at Yarmouk Stadium after being forced to evacuate our neighborhood…
…I have four children, including two newborns. Life here is a relentless struggle, especially during the winter months; every day presents the same hardships…
…Our tent floods whenever it rains. Even when we dig drainage channels, the water still seeps in, and we have to manually bail it out…
…My children have been moved between several hospitals since birth. Our only wish is for stability and a safer environment for our children to grow up in…”

8. VARIOUS OF FAMILY COPING WITH HARSH LIVING CONDITIONS GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - DEC. 29: Inside a makeshift tent pitched on the grounds of Yarmouk Stadium, Esma and Ramadan al-Jabri spend their nights awake, shielding their 3-month-old twin daughters from the biting winter wind and rain leaking through plastic sheets.
The Al-Jabri family is among thousands of displaced Palestinians living in temporary shelters across Gaza City. For this family of six, including the newborns and two other young children, the arrival of winter has transformed their fragile tent into a site of constant struggle against cold, humidity, and disease.
The parents described a repetitive, exhausting cycle of survival. Esma al-Jabri noted that despite attempts to reinforce the tent with plastic layers, rainwater frequently seeps onto their bedding. The damp environment has exacerbated health problems for one of the twins, leading to multiple hospital visits since birth.
The mother said that she often limits basic activities, such as lighting small cooking fires, out of fear that the fumes or a stray spark could harm the children in the cramped, poorly ventilated space.
Ramadan al-Jabri, who was forced to flee his home with his family earlier this year, described their daily life as a struggle.
Like many in the camp, the family relies on dwindling humanitarian aid and improvised heating methods to endure the season.
According to the Gaza Civil Defense, 25 people, including six children, have died from cold and the collapse of damaged buildings in Gaza amid freezing weather conditions in the war-torn enclave.
Spokesperson Mahmoud Basal said that 18 buildings that had been damaged in previous Israeli strikes had fully collapsed, and more than 110 others recorded partial collapse in the current low-pressure weather system, threatening the lives of thousands of displaced people sheltering in these buildings.
The spokesman added that 90% of tents sheltering displaced civilians were uprooted or flooded in heavy rains and strong winds across Gaza, with thousands of families left without any shelters or any clothes that could have protected them from the harsh weather.
He called for urgently starting the reconstruction of Gaza and providing mobile homes that would protect the lives and dignity of Palestinians.
The Israeli army has killed more than 71,200 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 171,200 others since October 2023 in Gaza in a brutal assault that also left the enclave in ruins.
Despite a ceasefire that took effect in Gaza on Oct. 10, Israel still closes the territory’s crossings and prevents the entry of mobile homes and reconstruction materials, worsening the plight of nearly 2.4 million people in the enclave.
