GUERRERO, MEXICO - JAN. 2: Authorities in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero launched aerial patrols on Friday, Jan. 2, to assess potential damage following a strong earthquake.

The magnitude 6.5 tremor, centered near the town of San Marcos, shook the region and was felt as far away as the capital. Footage released by the Guerrero Ministry of Public Security shows officers surveying urban areas from a helicopter to check for structural failures.

The quake briefly interrupted a press conference being held by President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City, though officials have not yet reported any immediate casualties or major destruction.
