“...This is a state of emergency, but what we need is clear information through the media. We are told to check the internet, but without electricity, you can’t access the internet... The night isn’t the main problem — it’s the daytime. Without electricity, there is no hot water, and cooking is simply not possible... We hope the situation will be resolved as quickly as possible, but most people now believe it probably won’t be fixed by Thursday.”

“...Nothing works here anymore. There is no water, no electricity. For us, this is an absolute catastrophe... It’s 14 degrees inside the apartment, and our son is only two years old, so we had to stay with friends... Doctors warned that if the building stays without heating in sub-zero temperatures, it could become uninhabitable... What matters now is protecting homes and keeping medical services running. The authorities need to act.” BERLIN, GERMANY - JAN. 5: Berlin’s electricity provider said Monday, Jan. 5, that about 27,800 households and 1,450 commercial customers remain affected by a major power outage in southwest Berlin.

According to Stromnetz Berlin, the districts of Nikolassee, Zehlendorf, and Wannsee remained affected, while power was restored to around 14,000 households and more than 500 businesses in the Lichterfelde area.

Authorities said repair work on the damaged cables is ongoing and electricity is expected to be restored by Thursday, Jan. 8.

"Power is expected to be restored to all customers on Thursday afternoon, 8 January 2026. Our teams are on site and we are working hard to restore power," the company said.

"We hope the situation will be resolved as quickly as possible," said Herrmann, a resident getting hot water from a supermarket.

For her, the night is not the main problem — it’s the daytime. "Without electricity, there is no hot water, and cooking is simply not possible..."

Another resident, Kerstin Mueller, who lives near Mexico Square, said her family was forced to stay with friends due to freezing indoor temperatures, adding that doctors warned prolonged outages could leave buildings uninhabitable.

Local authorities declared a large-scale emergency, urging residents to stay with relatives if possible and to conserve mobile phone use until power is restored.

A far-left group has claimed responsibility for the sabotage attack that left around 50,000 households without electricity in Berlin on Saturday.

According to reports in the German media, the Vulkangruppe sent a letter to police saying it had set fire to cables connected to an energy plant in the Lichterfelde district, describing the act as “an action in the public interest.”

The group claimed it had successfully sabotaged a natural gas power plant, portraying the attack as an act of international solidarity against the fossil fuel industry.

The group also apologized to residents of less affluent neighborhoods affected by the outage, saying its sympathy for the wealthy was limited.

Authorities said the Vulkangruppe has been linked to multiple arson attacks in Berlin and Brandenburg since 2011 and has also been associated with attacks on the electrical infrastructure of a Tesla factory in 2021 and 2024.

Berlin’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies the group as anarchist.

The fire damaged electricity cables, cutting power to about 50,000 households and 2,000 commercial businesses, affecting more than 100,000 people.
