Sudden Whiteout Blizzard Buries Sapporo Streets Under Heavy Snowfall
A sudden whiteout blizzard hit Sapporo on January 8, 2026, dramatically reducing visibility and burying streets under deep snow. Footage filmed near the Shingen ramen shop shows vehicles almost completely covered, snow piled high along roads, and near-zero visibility as conditions rapidly worsened.
Authorities issued a major snow warning as snowfall accumulated rapidly, reaching around 62 cm by evening. The intense conditions followed an unusually mild start to winter, catching residents off guard and creating concerns over road clearance and transport disruptions across the city.
