Bomb disposal units trawl border villages for unexploded ordnance
Bomb squads trawled border villages for unexploded ordnance from clashes between Thailand and Cambodia.
Explosive ordnance disposal units recovered the deadly remnants of rocket fire scattered across villages in Sa Kaeo province on January 7.
Officers said they retrieved BM21 rockets, mortar shells, and munitions fragments along rural roads, rice fields and near temples close to the frontier.
One live explosive was found next to a village checkpoint and rushed to a secure site before it was detonated.
Soldiers said they also seized a Type 69 anti-personnel bounding landmine as Thailand accused Cambodia of violating the Ottawa Treaty banning landmine use.
Heavy equipment and wire ropes were used to recover rocket fragments from deep craters.
All explosives were later destroyed in controlled blasts, authorities said.
Police have warned villagers to refrain from touching any objects resembling explosives.
Thailand and Cambodia declared a ceasefire on December 27, ending weeks of conflict that left at least 26 Thai soldiers dead and one Thai civilian injured.
In Cambodia, the number of military fatalities is believed to be much higher, though regime chiefs have not revealed the actual figure.
The truce has been put in jeopardy following alleged Cambodian mortar fire that injured a Thai soldier in Ubon Ratchathani province on January 6.
Cambodia has allegedly dismissed the cross-border fire as an 'accident', claiming two of its soldiers were also injured in a 'rubbish heap explosion' in Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, opposite Ubon Ratchathani.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has demanded an explanation for the alleged peace breach, adding Thailand is prepared to retaliate if necessary.
