A Chinese fugitive was arrested in Thailand over alleged financial crimes in China.

Li reportedly stole more than seven billion baht (166 million GBP) by 'illegally accepting deposits' in his home country.

He fled to northern Thailand and went into hiding in the Hang Dong district of Chiang Mai province.

Police raided his home on January 9, on a search warrant issued by the Chiang Mai Kwaeng Court.

Li was detained as his stay permit in Thailand had also been revoked.

Police Major General Sarawut Khonyai, commander of Immigration Division 5, said: ‘We have informed the suspect of the revocation of his visa and summoned him to Chiang Mai Immigration for further legal action.'
