Rare cold winter in Spain create beautiful mountain scenery for wildlife watching
Central Spain has been experiencing colder-than-normal weather, and with that has come the rare appearance of snow.
Wildlife enthusiast Ewan Wilson took the opportunity to explore the normally sun-soaked mountains of Northern Madrid to film its largest inhabitant, the griffon vulture. An animal that is normally used to warmer weather.
The landscape, which is used to mild winters and scorching summers, was instead caked in deep snow. The Madrid skyscrapers can be seen in the distance, but they seemed out of place in a winter scene that looked more like Scotland than Spain.
These large birds, whose wingspan is about 6ft long, seemed more at home than I was in the snow. They went about their day building nests, socialising, and soaring overhead. Watching an animal that is normally at home in Southern Europe and Morocco enjoying a rare snow day was a real treat.
