Brittany, France - January 20, 2026 Video recorded by photographer and videographer Miossec Matteo captures a striking timelapse of the aurora borealis glowing above the Phare de l'Ile Vierge during the night of January 19 to 20, 2026. The short timelapse shows the dark night sky suddenly alive with vivid green auroral curtains and bands shifting above the isolated lighthouse. The lights ripple and pulse in flowing waves, with occasional brighter green pillars and faint pink or magenta tones along the edges. The aurora appears low on the northern horizon, arching over the Atlantic Ocean and perfectly framing the lighthouse. The sky transitions from deep black to luminous green, with stars visible through clearer patches. The Phare de l'Ile Vierge dominates the center of the scene. The tall white granite tower, standing 82.5 meters high and topped by a black lantern room, rises from its small rocky island, softly lit by ground lighting or moonlight. Below, the surrounding ocean remains calm and dark, reflecting subtle traces of the auroral glow on the water surface. No people, boats, or strong artificial lights are visible, leaving the focus entirely on the natural display. The footage documents a rare aurora sighting at this southern latitude, with Brittany located around 48 degrees north, well below typical viewing zones. The display occurred during heightened auroral activity in mid-January 2026, linked to geomagnetic disturbances during the declining phase of Solar Cycle 25. Clear coastal skies and the exposed location off Plouguerneau in Finistere provided ideal conditions for observing the phenomenon. Similar auroral displays were reported across northern France on the same night, making the event a remarkable moment for the region.
