Traffic, pedestrians Storyline The U.S. move to transfer Islamic State (IS) detainees from Syria to Iraq reflects its hegemonic logic and disregard for other nations' sovereignty, an Iraqi analyst said in an interview with the China Media Group (CMG) on Thursday. The U.S. military began transferring up to 7,000 Islamic State (IS) detainees from Syria to "secure detention facilities" in Iraq, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Wednesday. Iraqi authorities confirmed on the same day that an initial group of 150 detainees had already been relocated from northeastern Syria. In the interview, Muhsin Aqili, an Iraqi political analyst, noted that years of turmoil in Syria have significantly weakened security at camps and prisons. He said that the United States chose to transfer the detainees and the security risks as it was unable to effectively maintain security control on the ground. "The successive Iraqi governments have repeatedly refused the transfer of these extremist group members into Iraq, but the United States has exerted persistent pressure. The arrangement, facilitated by agreements between the United States and the Syrian transitional government, has eventually led to the current situation. This reflects the consistent logic of Trump's administration, which is 'America First'," he said. According to Aqili, the U.S. move also underscores its long-standing disregard for the sovereignty of other countries. "The strategic essence of the United States is hegemony and interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Now, the United States attempts to exert control in Iraq and many other nations to enforce a so-called unipolar order," he added.
