Daughter surprises mum with dream NY trip after working 96-hour weeks to pay for it
This is the moment a daughter surprised her mum with a dream trip to New York - after working 96-hour weeks to save up the money.
Abbie McSorley, 20, spent five months working night shifts at a care home so she could give her mum the birthday gift of a lifetime.
She said she wanted to "give back" to her mum, who raised her as a single parent, describing her as her "whole life, support system and best friend"."
Determined to show her appreciation, Abbie set herself a mission in August 2024: to save enough to cover flights, hotel, visas and activities for a New York getaway.
Abbie's mum Amanda McSorley, 38, had always dreamed of visiting the Big Apple but had never been able to afford it.
Working relentless shifts, often eight 12-hour nights in a row, Abbie clocked up around 96 hours a week.
The 20-year-old was eventually able to surprise her mum with the news in October last year in an emotional video.
Abbie, a carer from Erskine, Renfrewshire, Scotland, said: "I kept the secret for two months."
"I had originally planned to tell her on Christmas but my mouth couldn't hold its water."
"It made everything worth it - all the long hours of work, the planning and saving everything was so worth it. "
"It felt incredible to be able to give back to my mum."
Amanda gave birth to Abbie when she was just 17 and raised her with help from Abbie's gran and other relatives.
The pair are incredibly close, relying on each other through every part of life.
Abbie said: "My mum has been my whole life, my support system, my best friend and it has always just been me and her."
"My mum deserves a break away more than anyone I know."
Amanda had always dreamed of visiting New York City, but the high cost meant it was a dream she had to put on hold.
So when Abbie thought of a way to repay her mum for everything she had done, a trip to the Big Apple seemed like the perfect choice.
Determined to make it happen, Abbie worked overtime for five months, often pulling eight-day stretches in a row, to save for the holiday.
Abbie said: "New York has always been a dream of me and my mum."
"I figured out a plan of how many hours and days I would need to work a week to be able to afford and I asked my work to add on extra days on top of my contracted days to be consistent. "
"I have been working 96 hours every week - eight 12-hour shifts in a row with six days off afterwards."
"It took about five months to fully save and pay for the whole holiday, hotel stays and visas."
The pair have birthdays less than two weeks apart, so the trip is planned for the week in between.
Abbie surprised Amanda with the news in October using an Etsy-bought scratch card that revealed their holiday destination.
She said: "I am grateful to be able to take her to one of her dream locations that she can now cross off her bucket list!"
"We're so excited - we can hardly wait!"
