Thai military clear mines along Cambodia border before reopening to the public
Thai soldiers cleared landmines as they prepared to reopen a temple on disputed land captured during clashes with Cambodia.
Footage shows engineers and bomb disposal officers walking through a temporary trench while inspecting areas around the Prasat Ta Khwai temple in Surin province, on January 26.
The trench, lined with sacks as stepping stones, was dug to serve as a safe path through the area still riddled with landmines.
The temple remained restricted from the public as the Fine Arts Department said it was at risk of collapsing.
Officials said the strip of land needed to be cleared for safety before renovations can begin. Deviating from designated routes is also prohibited, they added.
The army said road improvements were ongoing as a new pavement was being constructed, connecting to an existing road previously used by Cambodian forces at the base of a hill army base.
Explosive ordnance teams have been recovering unexploded Cambodian shells left from weeks of fighting along the border.
Thailand and Cambodia declared a ceasefire on December 27, ending weeks of conflict that left at least 26 Thai soldiers dead and one Thai civilian injured.
In Cambodia, the number of military fatalities is believed to be much higher, though regime chiefs have not revealed the actual figure.
But the truce has been put in jeopardy following alleged Cambodian mortar fire that injured a Thai soldier in Ubon Ratchathani province on January 6.
Cambodia has allegedly dismissed the cross-border fire as an 'accident', claiming two of its soldiers were also injured in a 'rubbish heap explosion' in Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, opposite Ubon Ratchathani.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has demanded an explanation for the alleged peace breach, adding Thailand is prepared to retaliate if necessary.
