Skier deploys airbag to save himself from avalanche

A special airbag saved a skier recently when he was caught in an avalanche in the Czech Republic.

Lukas Novak was enjoying some off-piste skiing with his girlfriend Pavlina in the northern Jeseniky Mountains on March 23 when he suddenly felt the snow beneath his skis give way.

Dramatic footage from his helmet camera shows a section of the slope cracking and beginning to slide towards him.

When Novak realises what is going on, he inflates his airbag which helps him to stay on top of the torrent of snow.

The avalanche still carries him tens of metres down the slope and sends him crashing into trees but, crucially, he avoids being buried and emerges unscathed.
