Big lizard basks in sun with terrapin before entering the water

This video was recorded during a safari in the Kruger National Park. After stopping at a waterhole we noticed two reptiles basking on a rock together. The big lizard was identified as a water monitor lizard. The monitors are the largest lizards in Africa. These large lizards have voracious appetites and will hunt and eat whatever they can. Right next to the big lizard was a turtle like looking reptile called a terrapin. It was clear that the water monitor was not bothered by his presence. Although both turtles and terrapins are aquatic, the terrapin lives in fresh water opposed to the ocean. Terrapins are omnivores, have webbed feet instead of flippers and can retract their heads into their shells. As with all reptiles, this lizard and terrapin were busy regulating their body temperatures by warming up in the sun. Eventually the monitor lizard decided he needs to cool down again and enters the water for a short swim to the other side where he got out to continue with his basking in the sun to warm himself again.
