Tiny caterpillars cover bush in ghostly 'tent-like' web

TINY caterpillars have completely covered this shrub in Sheffield by spinning a 'tent' of silk over it.
A worker in Sheffield spotted it in the suburb Crookes when he was on his way into the city during his morning commute.
He said: "It just caught my eye because it looked so unusual. I've never seen anything like this before.
"There were only about four or five of these caterpillars there, so they must have been working hard to cover so much of the bush."
He added: "I'll be keeping an eye on it over the next few days to see how much more they can do.
"I'd be very interested if anyone could tell me what type of caterpillar they are."
It has been hard to pinpoint which type of caterpillar it is, but among the type that spin webs in the UK is the brown tail moth which can cause irritation if it gets on your skin.
People are advised not to touch the insects and to keep children and pets away.
Other types of larvae which spin this type of web are the ermine moth and lackey moth.
The caterpillars had taken up residence on a blackthorn shrub, which is a common habitat for this type of creepy crawly.
