Crested Ducks (Anas or Lophonetta specularioides) are a largely marine duck that is found loafing and feeding on beaches and in the shallows. A pair of Crested Ducks and their four ducklings were on the beach at Carcass Island Lodge, off the north-west coast of West Falkland. Two of the ducklings were sheltering from the strong summer wind, huddled under their mother – they were then joined by two others who seemed to annoy her. She suddenly got up, leaving all four ducklings exposed on the sand. The ducklings were startled by a white male Kelp Goose, and they scattered before being called back together by their parents. With them were several Magellanic Oystercatchers, some of them making their piping call. The duck family seemed nervous with the proximity of the Oystercatchers and moved away from them, with both parents quacking. When the fuss died down, the four Crested Duck ducklings huddled together on the carpet of beached algal wrack for a snooze.
