The scientific misstep is seen as two science teachers attempt to launch a liquid nitrogen bottle rocket in front of kids on February 5 on Australia's. Central Coast.

These two Australian Science Teachers are trialling the launching of a massive triple liquid nitrogen bottle rocket in front of a small group of homeschooled kids. They first demonstrate a small bottle rocket by adding some diet cola to it, then liquid nitrogen before quickly inverting the bottle. The liquid nitrogen reacts with the cola causing it to spray out the bottom, launching the rocket upwards.
They then attempt to launch the giant liquid nitrogen bottle rocket. It is made up of three 15 litre office water bottles glued together, with a pvc pipe shaft attached as the rocket's body. In order to hold it upside down it has a steel rod through the rocket body which it pivots on. The rocket is first inverted, 8 litres of diet cola is added, followed by 8 litres of liquid nitrogen. The rocket is then quickly spun around into launch position. Unfortunately there was not enough diet cola and most of it sprayed out before it could get to launch position meaning there just wasn't enough thrust when the pin was pulled out, which meant it failed to launch.
The Teachers will use much more diet cola when they repeat the launch attempt at a school next week. The school is promoting a student trip to NASA at the end of the year and are doing this launch to generate interest amongst the students.
