The UK's first stainless steel road bridge was lifted into place on Thursday - replacing an ancient bridge swept away by stormy weather.

The new £5 million, 300 tonne structure, which stretches across the River Eamont in Pooley Bridge, Cumbria, took three hours to be put in place by a huge 1,200 tonne mobile crane.

The 128ft single-span structure would be the first stainless steel road bridge of its kind in the country, a spokesman said.

Its 251-year-old stone predecessor was washed away by Storm Desmond in 2015.

Work was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
