An historic bridge collapsed during heavy floods from Super Typhoon Doksuri in the Philippines.

The deck of the 456-metre steel arch Old Quirino Bridge connecting Bantay and Santa towns in Ilocos Sur province was washed away by the overflowing Abra River as the storm hammered the country on July 27.

The Ilocos Sur Provincial Tourism and Development Office said 'high water elevation and strong river current' swept away the middle section of the structure, also destroying a light display at the centre of the bridge.

Doksuri, known as Egay in the Philippines, battered the country but weakened slightly overnight, losing its super typhoon status on July 26. It brought gale-force winds and heavy rain, killing at least 30, the country's national disaster agency said.

Chinese media said Doksuri has landed in Jinjiang City in China's southeastern Fujian province on July 28 morning. The typhoon displaced tens of thousands of people and left at least 20 dead, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
