Interesting footage shows how locals tie colourful ribbons around certain types of trees in Thailand to bring good luck.

Buddhist followers make offerings to the hopea odorata trees as they believe they contain the spirit of a woman.

Often they will tie colourful ribbons around the trunk or hang a silk pink dresses and put amulets on the bark.

Thais believe that this honours the spirit of Nang Ta-khian - a beautiful woman from Buddhist mythology and folklore whose spirit is said to dwell inside hopea odorata trees.

The older and bigger the tree, the stronger the spiritual presence of the ghost, they believe.

Many locals hope that by doing this, the spirit will bring them good luck and fortune.

The strange sight is often noticed by tourists and visitors to Thailand, a country in Southeast Asia, but few people realise the meaning behind the colurful ribbons tied round the trees.
