Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit have arrested and charged the driver following a fatal fail-to-remain collision involving a cyclist in the City of Markham.

On Monday, June 15, 2020, at 8:22 a.m., York Regional Police were called to the area of Carlton Road and Old Ivy Lane, which is just east of Main Street Unionville, for a report of a cyclist who had been struck by a vehicle. When officers arrived, they located the cyclist, a 50-year-old man from the City of Markham, who was suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to hospital where sadly he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver who struck the cyclist left the scene prior to police arrival.

Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit obtained video surveillance that showed the suspect vehicle with damage following the collision. On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, investigators found that the suspect had made a false police report regarding a collision. Investigators located the damaged vehicle at an auto repair shop in Markham. The suspect was placed under arrest and has been charged.

The accused was released and will be appearing in the Ontario Court of Justice on October 1, 2020.

“I want to thank our community for quickly coming forward to provide valuable video evidence in this investigation,” said Chief of Police Jim MacSween. “I also want to recognize the efforts of our officers who have worked around the clock to make sure that the person responsible for this tragic death is brought before our courts.”
