Today (August 20th) marks the 76th anniversary of one of the UK's most famous & dangerous shipwrecks sinking in the Thames.

The WWII American liberty ship SS Richard Montgomery ran aground & sank on 20 August 1944. Most of the 7,000 tons of munitions being transported were removed by Stevedores at the time, but it ending up sinking with 1,400 tons still onboard and submerged to this day.

Experts are divided over the risk the ship presents, which lies between the Medway and Thames shipping channels, and what to do with it.

Footage of the three masts visible above the water line taken at low tide this morning (the Essex coastline can be seen in background, which is 5 miles from the wreck site, Sheerness is only 1.5 miles from the wreck).
