Winter weather in norther China produced an amazing natural phenomenon as methane bubbles became trapped in a frozen lake.

The video, filmed in the city of Mohe in Heilongjiang Province on November 22, shows several white circular disks piling up on each other inside the frozen Lotus Lake when the temperature dropped to -18 degrees Celsius.

Two men were seen digging a hole in the frozen lake and using a lighter to ignite the methane in it.

According to reports, the methane gas is released from the decaying plants in the lake creating bubbles which are then trapped within the ice and freeze into circular disk shapes.

The video was provided by local media with permission.
