Police Minister Bheki Cele, speaking at a press conference to update the media about ongoing investigations into Cape Town extortion rings, said he had a "super" relationship with JP Smith, Cape Town's mayoral committee member for safety and security.

This comes after a long standing frosty relationship between Cele and Smith. In 2018 Smith together with Democratic Alliance councillor, Angus Mckenzie, was booted out of a meeting Cele held with residents of Bonteheuwel.

JP Smith is a politically appointed head of safety and security in the City of Cape Town, under the control of the Democratic Alliance, whilst Bheki Cele is the national minister of police appointed by national government, under the control of the African National Congress.
