A group of protesters gathered at St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town in support of dismissed police officer Major-General Jeremy Vearey. Vearey was recently dismissed after he faced a disciplinary process for a social media post. Vearey was an anti-apartheid freedom fighter in the ruling ANC’s military wing uMkhonto we Sizwe (The Spear of the Nation). Vearey also served as on Nelson Mandela’s personal protection team.

The protesters then proceeded from St George's Cathedral and marched through the Cape Town CBD to hand over a memorandum at parliament.

Aldred De Klerk, a crime analyst, joined the protest in his personal capacity to show support for Vearey. De Klerk believes that the cases against Vearey and others is indicative of a collapse of the leadership within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Father Micheal Weeder, the Dean of St George’s Cathedral, led the protest and alleges that the dismissal of Vearey is to the benefit of criminal interests.

Benson Ngqentsu, the Western Cape Leader of the South African Communist Party, has called for judicial enquiry into SAPS to weed out remaining elements of the Bantustan police forces. Bantustans refer to the illegal black homelands set up by the apartheid government as independent states for black people.

Caroline Peters, a Cape Flats gender based violence activist, said Cape Flats women were adversely affected by what happens within police ranks.

Henriette Abrahams, a community activist from Bonteheuwel, said they are fully in support of Jeremy Vearey, stating that it’s poor communities that suffer under incompetent police.

Father Michael Weeder handed over a memorandum of demands to Charles Ford, a representative from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office.
